One person was killed and three others were injured, two of them seriously, this Sunday in Brazil, in a clash between fans before the Rio de Janeiro state championship match between Flamengo and Vasco da Gama.

Although the events took place yesterday, only today the local authorities confirmed that there was one fatality as a result of the incidents that took place in the streets of the northern area of Rio de Janeiro.

The deceased was wounded in the vicinity of the Maracana, while the other three people were shot by two men on a motorcycle in Sao Cristovao, according to security forces.

The victim had been hospitalized badly wounded on Sunday in a hospital in the center of the city, the Rio de Janeiro Health Secretariat said in a note.

“The man, unfortunately, did not resist and died,” said a statement from the agency, without specifying what type of injuries he suffered.

In addition to the fatal victim, whose age was not disclosed, seven people were hospitalized. Two of them are in “serious condition” and another in “stable condition”. Meanwhile, three were discharged and one more left the medical unit of his own free will.

In the midst of the investigations to determine how the fan was killed, the local police reported that metal bars and mittens were seized.

The classic of the city of Rio de Janeiro, won by Vasco da Gama by 1-0, was played at the Maracanã, in the vicinity of which the violence lasted several hours.

The images were captured by several social network users who did not hesitate to publish them. In some of them you can see how the fans clash amidst the smoke of tear gas and the thunder of rubber bullets.

The most violent events took place in Sao Cristóbal, a neighborhood neighboring Maracaná, where the police were also attacked.
