April 18 (Global Web Wire)- The State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE) has obtained an arrest warrant against Julio César Chávez, the mayor of Guadalupe, Zacatecas, for his alleged involvement in the crimes of aggravated homicide and aggravated robbery against Raúl Calderón Samaniego, a former member of Los Románticos de Zacatecas, that took place on January 2, 2023.
The FGJEZ has requested the procedure of impeachment and removal from office of the mayor, which was presented before the plenary session of the LXIV State Legislature this Tuesday. Congressman Enrique Laviada Cirerol, president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), presented the request to the legislature.
The Jucopo president received the official letter from the FGJEZ on April 17, which stated that Julio César Chávez participated in the crimes of aggravated homicide and aggravated robbery. The Jucopo president ensured that the Prosecutor’s request will be addressed with institutionalism and strict adherence to legality.
Raul Calderon Samaniego, a 37-year-old lawyer and musician, was found dead on January 2, 2023, inside his home in the Historic Center of Zacatecas. The necropsy revealed that he died from gunshot wounds.
The impeachment petition presented by the FGJEZ will now be referred to the Legislative Jurisdictional and Governmental Commissions. If the ruling is affirmative, the full Congress will participate in the procedural trial as a court of law.
This is not the first time that the Public Prosecutor’s Office has publicly requested the removal of a mayor from office. In 2020, Francisco Murillo Ruiseco presented a request for the removal of the mayor of Mazapil for the crime of embezzlement, but the request did not proceed.
Removal from office is the removal of a person from their position as a punishment or correction. It is generally applied to those working in the service of the State and other public entities.
Causes of responsibility that lead to or imply removal from office are provided for in criminal laws and special laws of political and administrative responsibility.
Political responsibility, as stated in Article 110 of the Constitution, is punished with the removal of the public servant and their disqualification to perform any public service functions, jobs, positions, or commissions of any nature.
