Former Honduran goalkeeper Elmer Canales passed away at the age of 39 due to a heart attack on Good Friday morning at his residence in Comayagua.

The remains of Elmer Canales are currently being watched over in Comayagua, the department where he was born in 1983.

The former goalkeeper, who was part of the national team, suffered two attacks in the last three years.

In 2019, he suffered his first attack after an unknown assailant shot him in the head. Canales was between life and death at the Hospital de Occidente but managed to survive.

In February 2022, he received multiple machete wounds in the Boca del Diablo area of his native Comayagua. He was taken to Hospital Escuela, where he recovered convincingly.

Football career

Canales began his career in the lower divisions of Olimpia. He also played for Real España, Deportes Savio, Vida, and Hispano.

Atlético Independiente de Siguatepeque also gave him a chance in the Liga de Ascenso. Coach Luis Fernando Suárez called him up to the Bicolor for the first time.

In addition, his football experience included two promotions to the National League: Hispano and Deportes Savio of Santa Rosa de Copán.
